Trauern als Paar

Männer und Frauen sind in vielen Dingen unterschiedlich. Aber wie ist das in der Trauer? Trauern Männer anders als Frauen? Müssen wir unbedingt über unsere Gefühle sprechen und gehören Tränen zum «richtigem» Trauern dazu? Diese und einige andere Fragen bzw. Vorurteile beleuchte ich in meinem heutigen Blog-Beitrag. Vielleicht habt ihr Lust von euren Erfahrungen als Paar zu berichten?

«Jeder trauert anders»

Diesen Satz hörten mein Mann und ich nach dem Tod unseres Sohnes zum Glück einige Male von der Spital-Seelsorgerin. Auch ich betone das in jeder Trauerbegleitung von Eltern bzw. Elternteilen. Fast immer kommen Frauen zu mir. Selten mal ein Mann und wenn, dann eher zur Unterstützung. Was der Grund dafür sein könnte, erzähle ich später. Im ersten Schritt möchte ich erwähnen, wie wichtig es ist, diesen einfachen und doch so bedeutenden Satz «Jeder trauert anders!» wirklich zu verinnerlichen. Er ist keine Floskel, sondern Realität! Erkennen wir diese Realität wertfrei an, verhindern wir damit viele Missverständnisse und Verletzungen. Insbesondere als Paar.

Stirbt ein Kind, bricht für Eltern eine Welt zusammen. Um diese Extremsituation gemeinsam zu meistern - wobei es anfangs vermutlich eher ums Überleben geht - braucht es Offenheit, Zugewandtheit und die Akzeptanz, dass es nicht DEN einen richtigen Trauerweg gibt. Viele Frauen haben das Bedürfnis nach Austausch und suchen immer wieder das Gespräch. Haben sie einen Mann an ihrer Seite, der nicht gerne über seine Gefühle spricht, geschweige denn Gefühle zeigt und lieber alles im stillen Kämmerlein mit sich selbst ausmacht, wird es schwierig. Schwierig für beide Seiten. Die Frau fühlt sich vielfach unverstanden bzw. versteht ihren Mann nicht und es kommt häufig zu Vorwürfen wie «Du trauerst ja gar nicht richtig um unser Kind!». Der Mann hingegen fühlt sich dadurch in der Regel unter Druck gesetzt, ebenfalls unverstanden und was in meinen Augen am allerschlimmsten ist: falsch! Falsch in seiner Art zu trauern, falsch im Umgang mit seiner Partnerin, falsch in seinem Denken und Fühlen. Natürlich gibt es auch Paare, bei denen es genau umgekehrt ist und der Mann sehr wohl offen mit seiner Trauer umgeht, die Frau sich aber eher zurückzieht und mit niemanden sprechen will. Oder beide haben einen sehr ähnlichen Umgang mit der Trauer. Wäre das die «Idealsituation»?

Glaubenssätze und Prägungen

Fangen wir von vorne an: Jeder trauert anders! Das ist vollkommen normal und auch nachvollziehbar, wenn wir bedenken, dass Trauer eine Reaktion auf einen absoluten Ausnahmezustand ist. Dabei greifen wir auf Vertrautes, auf Gelerntes und auf unsere ganz persönliche Notfallstrategie zurück. Ob uns genau das wirklich dienlich ist, sei dahingestellt. Aber zumindest fühlt es sich mehr oder weniger vertraut an. In einer Zeit, in der nichts mehr ist, wie es war – goldwert. Wenn wir nun als Kind vorgelebt bekamen, dass Probleme oder unangenehme Gefühle - und Trauer ist nun mal nicht besonders angenehm - lieber unter den Teppich gekehrt werden, als sich damit auseinanderzusetzen, werden wir diese Strategie vermutlich so weiterführen. Sind wir hingegen in einer Familie aufgewachsen, in der «schwierige» Emotionen Platz hatten, greifen wir in unserem Trauerprozess auch eher auf diese Variante zurück. Töchter und Söhne werden häufig sehr unterschiedlich von ihrer Herkunftsfamilie geprägt. Glaubenssätze wie «Echte Männer weinen nicht» oder «Männer müssen stark sein» kennen wir ja alle. Darum ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass es männlichen Trauernden eher schwerfällt, ihren Schmerz und ihre Verzweiflung zu zeigen und ihren Gefühlen Raum zu geben. Zumindest nicht auf die Art, wie es viele weibliche Trauernde tun. Deshalb, liebe Frauen, drängt eure Männer nicht zu einer Gesprächstherapie und schleppt sie auch nicht mit in eine Selbsthilfegruppe, wenn sich bei ihnen innerlich alles dagegen sträubt. Ja, ich weiss: Wir haben häufig das Gefühl, dass wir genau wüssten, was unserem Partner guttut. «Wenn er doch einfach mal drüber reden würde!» Aber mal ganz ehrlich: Was ist schon richtig? Und wem steht es zu darüber zu werten? Trauer ist eine der grössten Lehren fürs Leben. Was wir daraus lernen, ist jedoch unsere eigene Entscheidung. Im besten Fall gehen wir gestärkt aus einem Schicksalsschlag hervor, im schlechtesten verdrängen wir das Erlebte und es holt uns spätestens auf dem Sterbebett ein.

In Verbindung bleiben

Also müssen wir unseren Partner/unsere Partnerin einfach auf seine/ihre Art trauern lassen und alles ist gut? Ja und nein. So sehr ich dafür plädiere, jeden seinen ganz individuellen Trauerweg gehen zu lassen, braucht es als Paar jedoch auch einen gemeinsamen Nenner. Eine Verbindung oder Basis, die weiterhin bestehen bleibt bzw. erschaffen wird. Denn wenn zwar beide Elternteile die Trauer um ihr Kind zulassen, aber dabei ganz unterschiedliche Richtungen einschlagen, ohne zwischendurch einen Blick auf ihr Gegenüber zu werfen, entfernen sich die beiden womöglich so weit voneinander, dass ein gemeinsames Weitergehen kaum möglich ist. Aber wie können wir in Verbindung bleiben, wenn der eine kein Wort über den Verlust spricht und der andere von nichts anderem mehr reden kann? Hilfreich ist auf jeden Fall, unseren Fokus nicht nur auf unsere Partnerschaft zu richten. Natürlich ist es wünschenswert, mit dem Menschen an seiner Seite alle Gedanken und Sorgen teilen zu können und sich gegenseitig zu stärken. Jedoch funktioniert das schon bei alltäglicheren Problemen nicht in allen Beziehungen. Oft ist die beste Freundin oder die Mutter eine verständnisvollere Gesprächspartnerin als der eigene Mann. Genauso wie die auspowernde Jogging-Runde oder das Feierabend-Bier mit dem besten Freund mehr bewirken kann als ein tiefgehendes Gespräch mit der eigenen Frau. Vielleicht geniessen dafür beide die gemeinsamen Spaziergänge im Wald, ihren wöchentlichen Tanzkurs oder das gemütliche Kochen am Abend. Dabei entstehen dann plötzlich Gespräche, die wertvoll, aber ungezwungen sind. Und manchmal braucht es auch gar keine Worte, sondern nur das Gefühl von Verbundenheit. Dieses Gefühl kann sich beispielsweise beim gemeinsamen Besuch des Grabes, beim Anschauen der Fotoalben oder bei körperlicher Nähe einstellen. Wertvoll ist ebenso, wenn als Paar ein Ritual gefunden wird, um der Trauer Ausdruck zu verleihen. Sei es z. B., dass immer eine Kerze für die Verstorbenen brennt oder gemeinsam ein «Gute-Nacht» in den Himmel geschickt wird.

Wir müssen also gar nicht zwingend über unseren Verlust reden oder diesen beweinen? Wer mich kennt weiss, dass ich eine grosse Freundin von Kommunikation bin 😊Und ja, ich bin der Überzeugung, dass Gefühle gefühlt, Tränen geweint und das Unbegreifliche ausgesprochen werden sollte. Nur genügen dem einen dafür weniger Worte als dem anderen und jeder wählt seinen Gesprächspartner selbst aus. Genauso verhält es sich mit dem Weinen. Tränen sind heilsam und können ein Türöffner zu den verborgenen Emotionen sein, dürfen aber auch im Verborgenen fliessen. Und an manchen Tagen helfen auch alle Worte und Tränen nichts, sondern es braucht eine bewusste Trauerpause - um dem ganzen Schmerz und der emotionalen Belastung eine Weile zu entfliehen. Auch das darf sein.

Unterschiedliche Wege

Mein Mann und ich wählten ebenfalls ganz unterschiedliche Trauerwege. Nach den herausfordernden Tagen im Spital hatte er das Bedürfnis einen möglichst «normalen» Alltag mit unserer Tochter zu leben. Er ging mit ihr auf den Spielplatz, unter Leute, machte Besorgungen und redete mit den Nachbarn und Freunden über unseren Verlust. Gleichzeitig organisierte er für vier Wochen eine Vertretung für seine Firma und war für mich da. Ihm hätte die Arbeit sicher gutgetan und ich weiss, dass er «nur» mir zuliebe zuhause blieb. Bis heute bin ich ihm unendlich dankbar, dass er mir damit wertvolle Zeit des Rückzugs ermöglichte. Ich kümmerte mich zwar um unsere Tochter und erledigte leichte Hausarbeiten, aber ich wollte - bis auf wenige Ausnahmen - niemanden sehen, sondern kommunizierte lediglich über WhatsApp mit meiner Schwester und engen Freundinnen. Am meisten sehnte ich mich nach Ruhe, hatte mit schmerzhaften Nachwehen zu kämpfen und mich von einer Geburt zu erholen. Ich las viel über Trauer nach einem Kindsverlust und schrieb ein Trauertagebuch, um meine Gedanken zu ordnen und meine Gefühle in Worte zu fassen. Auch eine Empfehlung der Seelsorgerin.

Von unserem Umfeld erlebte mein Mann tiefe Betroffenheit, Mitgefühl und manchmal auch Verwunderung, dass er «schon» unter Leute gehen oder sogar lachen konnte. Für ihn war es wichtig, dass er von Manuel erzählen durfte, aber auch Raum für andere Themen da war. Er hatte immer ein offenes Ohr für meine Gedanken, Fragen und meine Trauer um unseren Sohn, auch wenn er selbst nicht so viel über ihn sprach oder viel weinte. Zumindest nicht vor mir. Was nicht heisst, dass er nicht um Manuel trauerte – im Gegenteil. Ich sehe noch immer seinen Gesichtsausdruck vor mir, nachdem er die Urne für unser Kind ausgesucht hatte. Dieser Gang zählte - neben der Beerdigung - zum schlimmsten in seinem Leben und das sah man ihm an. Kein Vater sollte eine Urne für sein Baby aussuchen müssen.

Stirbt ein Kind, nimmt der Vater sehr oft die Rolle des «Beschützers» ein und kümmert sich aufopferungsvoll um seine Frau, was wundervoll ist. Eventuell ist es sogar tröstlich, das Gefühl zu bekommen, wenigstens irgendetwas tun zu können und «Kontrolle» über diese Extremsituation zu gelangen. Andererseits führen das Funktionieren und Kümmern manchmal auch dazu, dass die eigene Trauer unterdrückt und nicht zugelassen wird. Gleichzeitig kann es als belastend empfunden werden, über längere Zeit der «Rettungsanker» für die eigene Ehefrau zu sein. Deshalb ist es wichtig, bei Bedarf noch weitere Personen wie Freunde, andere Betroffene oder Fachpersonen in die Trauerbewältigung miteinzubeziehen.
Um ein Kind zu trauern ist eine echte Beziehungsprobe. Manche bestehen sie und wachsen dadurch noch enger zusammen, andere scheitern daran. Die Trauer von Paaren verläuft in den wenigsten Fällen «synchron». Befindet sich der eine gerade an einem emotionalen Tiefpunkt, erkennt der andere vielleicht die ersten Lichtblicke und findet langsam ins Leben zurück. Trauernde hadern hin und wieder mit diesem Ungleichgewicht in ihrer Partnerschaft. Ich sehe es eher als eine Art Balancieren mit den Ressourcen, die einem gerade zur Verfügung stehen. Damit beide Seiten Raum für ihre Bedürfnisse bekommen, ist es bedeutend, immer wieder im Gespräch zu bleiben, wie der Umgang mit den vielen Höhen und Tiefen des Trauerprozesses gelingt, was wir uns wünschen und wie wir uns gegenseitig wahrnehmen. Dabei sollten wir akzeptieren, dass wir lediglich vermuten können, was unserem Gegenüber in seiner Trauer unterstützen könnte. Welchen Schritt wir wann, wie und in welchem Tempo gehen, entscheiden wir eigenverantwortlich.

In diesem Sinne wünsche ich allen trauernden Paaren, dass sie sich mit Respekt und Verständnis begegnen, sich Halt geben, wenn sie es brauchen und sich gleichzeitig die nötige Freiheit lassen, um ihren Schicksalsschlag zu überstehen. Jeder für sich, aber immer verbunden.
